ES 2025/2026 “Save As” Does Not Remember Original Folder – Fix & Workaround

ES 2025/2026 “Save As” Does Not Remember Original Folder

Issue

In EmbroideryStudio 2025/2026, the “Save As” dialog does not remember the original folder of each design.

When multiple designs from different folders are open, the save location defaults to the folder of the last opened design, instead of the design’s original location.

Cause

This behavior was introduced as part of a new requirement for other markets. However, it may not align with expected workflows for some users.

Solution / Workaround

You can restore the previous behavior—where each design remembers its original folder—by updating the Product.ini file.

Steps

Important: Make sure file extensions are visible in File Explorer (disable “Hide extensions for known file types”).

  1. Close EmbroideryStudio 2025/2026
  2. Navigate to:
    C:\Program Files\Wilcom\EmbroideryStudio 2025\BIN or C:\Program Files\Wilcom\EmbroideryStudio 2026\BIN
  3. Backup Product.ini
    • Copy and paste it in the same folder
    • Keep the backup file (e.g. Product – Copy.ini)
  4. Edit Product.ini
    • Right-click → Open with → Notepad
  5. Locate the [File] section and add:

    AddInitialPathToSaveDialogs=true
  6. Save the file
    • Save as Product.txt (e.g. in Documents)
  7. Rename the file to Product.ini
  8. Copy it back to the BIN folder and overwrite the original file
  9. Restart EmbroideryStudio

Result

After applying this change:

  • “Save As” will default to the original folder of each design
  • Behaviour will match earlier versions
